Help Fight the Literacy Crisis. Put Books in Children’s Hands.

In the 2024 Nation’s Report Card, 40% of U.S. fourth graders scored below the assessment’s Basic level in reading.That is four out of every ten fourth graders.

Among high school seniors, nearly one in three, or 32%, scored below Basic in reading.

Our children deserve the support to become confident readers, from their earliest years through the day they finish high school. And the teachers, librarians, and other educators helping them get there deserve our support.

We Have Stories is raising $10,000 to donate 1,000 free books to classrooms and libraries. 50 books each to 20 educators serving children from pre-K through their senior year of high school.

Every $10 buys one book. The more we raise, the more books we can donate.

Help a Child Find the Book They’ll Remember

The concern extends beyond test scores. In the 2025 national long-term-trend survey, just 14% of 13-year-olds reported reading for fun almost every day, down from 27% in 2012.

We want more for our children than reading only because an assignment requires it. We want them to discover stories they talk about with friends, books that help them understand something they’re going through, and subjects that make them curious enough to keep turning pages.

Books alone will not solve the literacy crisis. But we can take a concrete step: get more books to educators who need them and into the spaces where children can read them.

Your donation helps give a teacher more books to share, a librarian more choices to offer, and a child another opportunity to find something they want to read.

What Your Gift Provides

• $10 buys 1 book for a classroom or library.

• $50 buys 5 books for young readers to discover.

• $100 buys 10 books to help grow an educator’s collection.

• $500 funds a complete 50-book donation for one teacher, librarian, or other educator.

Each donation will help us build collections that educators can use with their students—not just for a single reading, but for books to be shared and returned to.

How the Books Will Reach Educators

Teachers, librarians, and other educators will apply through a short online form, sharing a little about their school, library, classroom, or other educational space and why they need books.

We’ll review the applications and select 20 educators to receive 50 free books each.

Selected educators will be contacted by email, and the books will be sent to the mailing addresses they provide. The books will be provided at no cost to the educators receiving them.

Reaching our $10,000 goal will fund 50 books each for 20 educators. Every additional $10 will allow us to donate another book.

You do not have to fund an entire classroom to contribute. Give one book, help build a collection, or fund all 50 books for an educator. Contributions of any amount move us toward the goal.
